We can all agree that no one want to be a Hufflepuff

10/1/12

Saturday I had adventures in British laundry. I had finally run out of socks so I hauled my dirty clothes down to the laundry room in F block. It kind of sucks that there is only one laundry room for all of Opal 2 but whatever. So the laundry machines are all coin operated but I couldn’t figure out how they worked because I kept putting money in but it wasn’t working. Turns out after about 10 minutes of struggling the machine was actually broken and I had to move to a different one. So I finally get my laundry in (I had to use two machines because washers/dryers are small here) and go to put my detergent in.  After getting the cap off I accidently drop the bottle and soap goes all over me. Go me!

That night Cindy and I headed to our first Harry Potter society meeting! It was pretty fun, we all went up one by one and got sorted into house. We reached into a witch’s hat (sorting hat) and pulled out our membership cards that had a house seal on them. I was sorted into Ravenclaw, which is obviously the best of the houses. It was funny because no one wanted to get sorted into Hufflepuff. After getting sorted and hanging out with a few of the other people Cindy and I decided to go get dinner at the Red deer. One of the PhD students was there that we knew and we invited him to sit with us. After a bit some of his friends came in that are 3rd year students (equivalent to a senior in undergraduate college).

They were really nice and invited us to a Ceilidh, which is dance kind of like a British folk square dance. It was so fun! They would teach you the different steps before the song started so that everyone knew how to do it, but we all ended up messing up and running into each other.

Sunday Flor, Nathalie and I went to Medowhall mall to go shopping. The clothes I brought here are not suitable for the weather, I need more sweaters! Since sizing here isn't small, medium, large like in the US it took some time to try and find clothes that fit. I am definably not a size 10 since the shirt didn't fit over my boobs. I ended up buying a few shirts from H and M , but that’s about it. I couldn't find much I liked.

Today I had Human Osteology and we were told our first bone quiz was next Monday. Basically what will happen is Pia will give us 20 items and we will have to answer a question about each. Like which side the part is from, to identify a certain portion of the bone, and later on if it is male or female. For this quiz we need to know all of the Vertebrae and the bones of the Thorax.  But it’s just not identifying the bone, its knowing the different parts of the specific  bone. It’s a lot of memorization, so me and the bone collection are going to have some long nights together
